Fatherhood

In My Daughter’s Eyes

This weekend was crazy busy.  This particular story of it starts on Sunday, where after Sunday School we hurried home to put together a video for last night’s graduation service before rushing back to church at 4 to have drama practice.  This was followed by Dinner Theater practice, which flowed into the graduation service.  After this we went over to the fellowship hall for a dinner.  All this time, my daughter Elly is being carried to and frow and held by people that don’t typically hold her (thanks Denise, Jennifer, and Daphene).  She is also in a place that is not her home.  You could tell that she was getting upset by all of the added stimulus and this came to a head in the dinner with everyone around and talking.  She was upset to the point of tears.  Daphene had just handed her to me and that was what I thought as I saw those tears.  Her world was upsetting her, and Daddy was about to come to the rescue.

I bundled her up close to my chest and held her where she could see little more than my big head (which, by the way, she has inherited.  She’s in the 20/25% for height and weight for her age, but the doctor always comments on how big her head is).  I looked into those bright blue eyes that we share, one with a tear streaking down from it, and began to sing softly to her.  For about 10 minutes I sang This Little Light of Mine and I don’t remember her blinking once.  She just stared at me the whole time.  She stopped crying.

I know that, at close to 5 months old, she won’t remember that night, but I will.  As a lady who talked at last night’s service referred to, it seemed to me to be one of those defining moments in life that shape all the rest.

I certainly love my little girl.  I feel that I am unusually and undeservedly blessed for the joy that she is to me.

  1. Not sure if you heard me when I passed by you during this time … but I said, “now there’s a moment!” … very sweet indeed and yes, a defining moment I’m sure!

  3. Definitely a moment to remember. Aren’t you glad you have this blog to record that memory? And I saw you and thought to myself…that is so incredibly sweet.
