Would You Sit Down and Hold Me?

This morning as I was getting ready for work, my son woke up and walked out of his room. He reached for me and I picked him up and was holding him as he cuddled in on my shoulder half asleep. The he said, “Would you sit down and hold me?” He loves it when I just sit there and hold him until he decides he’s either hungry or he wants Mommy.

Then, on the way to work, I was having my morning prayer time. Reagan’s words came back to me, and I found myself asking God, “Would you sit down and hold me?” The phrase brought tears to my eyes and a greater understanding of what I want from my God. I’ve often equated my relationship to Jesus with my son’s relationship to me. Jesus makes some allusions to that very relationship between Father and Child. In that moment this morning, I wanted attention from my Heavenly father. I wanted him to sit down and take some time to show me he cared. To show me some undivided attention.

I already knew that Jesus loved me and cared for me. I knew that he paid attention to my thoughts, needs, and prayers. In the same way, I’m sure that Reagan knows that I love him and care for him. He knows I’ll be there for him when he needs me. And yet, we both wanted to be reassured in the early morning hours at the beginning of a new day. It’s always nice when Jesus does something that says, “I’ve got you!”
