It’s a Girl!

I wrote a quick post last night, but I wanted to ellaborate more since this is a very important moment in my life.  So, if you read that post, this one should be better (or at least longer).  Wednesday morning we went to my wife’s doctor for the ultrasound that would, hopefully, tell us the sex of our baby.  My job allows us to take a day off around our birthday, so I took Wednesday off so that we could make a day out of it.

We got there at 10am and were met by my mother-in-law Rhonda, who was going to watch Reagan for us while we went back.  The wait wasn’t long, which was great because I was getting pretty anxious.  I hadn’t really decided whether I would prefer a boy or girl, so I thought that I would be really happy either way.  However, when the technician told us that it was a baby girl, I quickly realized that I had been wanting a girl for several weeks.  It had started, I believe, when I was watching a show and they had a segment where the Dad and Daughter were pictured with her growing up.  I think that put into me that I wanted to have a Daddy’s Girl.

One thing that was awesome about the Ultrasound was that they had just gotten in new equipment.  With this, they were able to show us 3D pictures of the baby that were incredibly real and easy to view.  Of course, our baby currently looks like an old man, but she was very cute nonetheless.  They also burn the entire ultrasound onto a DVD for you.

When we got outside and told Rhonda and Reagan the good news, Reagan quickly told us, “No, it’s a brother like Mac!” (Mac being a boy that Reagan plays with at church).  He argued for about 2 hours, and then finally gave in.  When we went by Target to by the Introductory Baby Outfit, Reagan was picking up things all over the store and saying, “Can I get this for my sister?”

Yesterday, Dessa and I sat down and talked about names.  We had told each other that we were going to wait until we found out the sex before we discussed it.  Well, after talking, we have decided on Elliana Abigail Freeman as the name for our beautiful little girl.  Elliana means “God’s answer to me” and Abigail means “Father’s Joy”.  I love the name.  Plus, calling her by the nickname “Elli” is so incredibly cute.

Well, that is about it.  I’m going to be the father of a great little boy and a wonderful little girl.  As I’ve been told several times by other parents, this will give me a more complete family.  I don’t know if I entirely agree with the statement, as we’ve been totally happy with Reagan as an only child (so happy, in fact, that we seriously thought about stopping there), but I understand the sentiment inasmuch as having a boy and a girl gives you a wonderful perspective from both sides.

One thing that I immediately began thinking about, however, was the teenage years.  Dessa told me to stay a little closer to the present, but that’s really hard for me.  Raising a girl through her teenage years scares me a lot.  I told Dessa that when we build a home, we’re going to build a Scare Room for potential boyfriends.  It will have guns hanging on the walls (unloaded, with maybe even the internal stuff taken out since I don’t like guns) plus it’ll have animal heads hanging on the walls (from hunters that I know hunt and eat what they catch rather than just killing for the sake of killing).  It’ll also have anything else that I can use to put the fear of the father into son potential sons-in-laws.

Well, I said that was about it and then started talking again.  Later peoples.
